About San Marco: the back story

San Marco is the ceremonial heart of Venice: the Basilica and the Doge’s Palace on the piazza, the cafés under the arcades, and, to the west, the Fenice and the Calle Larga XXII Marzo.

The piazza

The Basilica, the Campanile, the Doge’s Palace, the Torre dell’Orologio and the Museo Correr frame Piazza San Marco; Florian and Quadri face each other across it.

The Fenice

Walk west past Harry’s Bar to the Gritti Palace and the Teatro La Fenice.

Come early or late to have the piazza to yourself.

Our advice: book the Basilica and the Doge’s Palace ahead, and see the piazza at dawn.
